Stairwells
Every stairway floor opening should be guarded by a standard railing on all exposed sides except at the entrance of the stairway.

Manholes
Every manhole floor opening should be protected by removable standard railings.

 

Ladderways
Every ladderway floor opening or platform should be guarded by a standard railing on all exposed sides except the opening. The passage through the railing should either be a swinging gate or so offset that a person cannot walk directly into the opening.


Machinery
Regardless of height, all open-sided floors, walkways, platforms, or runways above or adjacent to dangerous equipment, pickling or galvanizing tanks, degreasing units, and similar hazards should be guarded with a standard railing.

Rooftop/Platform Edges
All open-sided floors or platforms significantly above ground level should be guarded by a standard railing on all open sides except where there is an entrance to a ramp, stairway, or fixed ladder.
